Keeping Organised (1 Chronicles 24-27)

Welcome back to The Bible Journey Daily Podcast. It’s great to have you with me again as we continue our study together through the book of 1 Chronicles. 1 Chronicles is a book that not only tells Israel’s story, but also teaches us how God prepares His people for His work.
In our last episode, we looked at 1 Chronicles 23, where David organised the Levites for the ministry of the temple. We discovered that organisation is not an unspiritual thing; in fact, it is essential. God is a God of order, and His work flourishes when His people are structured wisely.
Today we move into chapters 24 through 27, a section that continues this theme. These chapters may look like long lists of names, divisions, and assignments, but beneath the surface they reveal something important and practical:
If we want to do the will of God well, we must stay organised.
Organisation is not a one‑time event. It is an ongoing discipline. David didn’t simply prepare the Levites and walk away. He continued to structure the priesthood, the musicians, the gatekeepers, the administrators, and even the military divisions. All of that was done so that the worship and life of Israel would continue smoothly long after he was gone.
And that brings us to 1 Chronicles 24, where we begin to see how the people were placed into the plan God had designed…
INTRODUCTION:
Let’s begin with a quick review.
In this series, we’ve been walking through 1 Chronicles, and in the last chapter we saw that a biblical approach to being organised — whether in ministry, family, or personal life involves three phases:
1. Planning — deciding what needs to be done
2. Organisation — placing people within the plan
3. Administration — supervising the work so the plan is fulfilled
In the Old Testament, God designed the plan, and David organised it. He placed people into the roles God had assigned. Priests, Levites, musicians, gatekeepers, administrators, and all according to the divine blueprint for temple worship.
And what David did contain principles we can use to organise virtually anything: a church, a ministry, a family, or even our own daily lives.
That brings us today to 1 Chronicles 24, where we begin to see how the priestly and Levitical divisions were formed.
Verse 1 says:
“Now these are the divisions of the sons of Aaron.” Aaron had four sons. Two died before their father and left no descendants. That meant the priesthood continued through the two surviving sons — Eleazar and Ithamar.
Verse 3 tells us:
“Then David, with Zadok of the sons of Eleazar and Ahimelech of the sons of Ithamar, divided them according to the schedule of their service.”
To implement the plan laid out in chapter 23, David enlisted two chief priests, Zadok and Ahimelech, to help him divide the priesthood and the Levites into organised divisions. Each division was assigned a schedule, serving in rotation so that every priest had the opportunity to minister in the temple for approximately two weeks each year.
This system was reinstituted after the exile and continued into New Testament times. Luke 1 tells us that Zechariah, the father of John the Baptist, belonged to the division of Abijah, which is one of the very divisions listed here in 1 Chronicles 24.
Verse 5 explains the method:
“Thus they were divided by lot…”
The priests were selected by lot, not politically, not by preference, not by seniority, but by a method that symbolised God’s sovereignty over the process. The lot was cast in the presence of David and the leaders, and verse 6 tells us that a scribe recorded the results.
These first six verses form the introduction to the organisational structure of chapters 24–27. They tell us:
Who was involved.
How they were divided.
How they were selected.
And how their schedule was established.
From verse 7 onward, the Chronicler simply lists the names of the priests in the order they were chosen by lot — all the way to verse 19, which concludes:
“This was the schedule of their service in coming into the house of the Lord.”
After the priests, the Levites are placed into the plan. Verse 20 begins: “And the rest of the sons of Levi…”
The author then lists the names of the remaining Levites, those who were not priests, and it does that from verse 20 to verse 30. And verse 31 tells us that they too cast lots, just as the priests did.
So far, we have seen:
The priests placed in the plan
The Levites placed in the plan
And in the chapters that follow — 25, 26, and 27 — we will see musicians, gatekeepers, administrators, military leaders, and civic officials placed in the plan as well.
All of it is organisation.
All of it is intentional.
All of it is necessary.
And all of it teaches us how to stay organised in the work of God.
So far, we’ve seen the priests placed into the plan, and the Levites placed into the plan. Now the Chronicler moves to the next group of temple workers — the musicians.
The Musicians (1 Chronicles 25)
Chapter 25 opens with a fascinating statement:
“Moreover, David and the captains of the army separated for the service some of the sons of Asaph, Heman, and Jeduthun, who should prophesy with harps, stringed instruments, and cymbals.” (25:1)
Here we learn that certain Levites were appointed as singers and musicians, set apart to perform sacred service in the temple. But did you verse 1 contains a phrase that often raises questions: “…who should prophesy with harps…”
The Hebrew word translated prophesy means to speak or sing by inspiration. This was not predictive prophecy, but musical proclamation, worship that communicated divine truth. Their ministry was a form of inspired praise, where music became a vehicle for declaring the greatness of God.
This connection between music and proclamation is seen throughout Scripture. The Psalms themselves are musical prophecy, truth sung, not merely spoken. Paul echoes this in the New Testament:
“Speak to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs…”
(Ephesians 5:19)
Music is not filler in worship. It is proclamation.
Interestingly, verse 1 also notes that David appointed these musicians with the captains of the army. This suggests a close relationship between Israel’s religious and military life.
In ancient Israel, worship and warfare were often intertwined. The Ark accompanied the army in battle (Joshua 6). Trumpets sounded before conflict (Numbers 10). Worship was not separate from life, it was woven into every part of it.
Beginning in verse 2, the Chronicler lists the names of the musicians. Asaph, Jeduthun, Heman, and their sons, and all of them appointed to serve in the house of the Lord. Verse 4 says:
“All these were under the direction of their father for the music in the house of the Lord…”
This shows us that temple music was not random or improvised. It was structured, supervised, and organised. Worship was done with excellence.
Verse 7 tells us:
“So the number of them, with their brethren who were instructed in the songs of the Lord, all who were skillful, was 288.”
These musicians were:
Instructed — trained
Skillful — capable, understanding
Organised — divided into 24 courses of 12 men each
And once again, verse 8 tells us the method of selection:
“They cast lots for their duties, the small as well as the great, the teacher with the student.”
Casting lots ensured fairness. No one could claim favoritism. No one could manipulate the schedule. God oversaw the process.
Verses 9–31 then list the names of the musicians. We may not recognise the names, but God did. He recorded every one of them. That is significant because it shows us that God honours those who serve Him — even those whose names are forgotten by history.
So far, we have seen:
· Priests
· Levites
· Musicians
All placed into the plan.
Now we come to the next group.
2. The Gatekeepers (1 Chronicles 26:1–18)
This chapter begins by saying this is, “Concerning the divisions of the gatekeepers…”
Gatekeepers were temple guards, those responsible for protecting the sacred precincts day and night.
According to 1 Chronicles 23:5, there were 4,000 gatekeepers. Their job was to prevent unauthorized persons from entering the temple and thereby profaning it.
Verses 1–18 list the names of these gatekeepers. Verse 6 describes them as: “Men of great ability.”
The Hebrew word means strong, mighty, capable. “These were great men who had previously demonstrated their bravery now appointed to guard the temple from thieves, robbers, and unfit persons.
Their work required physical strength, vigilance, and courage. They guarded the temple at night as well as day. They were the first line of protection for the holiness of God’s house.
Verse 12 says: “Among these were the divisions of the gatekeepers…”
Verse 13 adds: “They cast lots…”
Again, the method is the same. Lots were cast to determine assignments. Organisation, fairness, and divine oversight.
Verse 19 concludes: “These were the divisions of the gatekeepers.”
Then another group placed into the plan in the second half 1 Chronicles.
The Treasurers: Beginning in verse 20, we meet the treasurers:
“…they were over the treasures of the house of God and over the treasures of the dedicated things.”
These men managed:
Tithes
Offerings
Dedicated gifts
Revenues
Spoils of war
Verse 27 says:
“Some of the spoils won in battles they dedicated to maintain the house of the Lord.”
The treasurers ensured that the temple had the resources it needed. They were administrators of sacred funds, faithful stewards of God’s provision.
Next the final few verses of this chapter cover:
The Civil Officials
Verses 29–32 describe civil officials. Judges and administrators who served outside Jerusalem. Verse 29 says:
“There were 1,700 able men who had oversight of Israel west of the Jordan for all the business of the Lord…”
These officials handled:
· Legal matters
· Civil disputes
· Administrative oversight
· Governance in the towns and villages
They ensured that justice and order were maintained throughout the nation.
So far, we have now seen five groups placed into the plan:
1. Priests and Levites
2. Musicians
3. Gatekeepers
4. Treasurers
5. Civil officials
All organised.
All structured.
All assigned.
All placed into the plan God designed.
This is biblical organisation on a grand scale, and this is staying organised for the work of God.
As we move deeper into these chapters, the text keeps piling up different types of workers. But the point of this extended passage is simple and consistent: all these various workers were being placed into the plan of operating the temple and the kingdom. This is organisation — biblical, intentional, and comprehensive.
But David’s organisational structure goes even further.
The Army IS NOW ORGANISED(1 Chronicles 27:1–15)
Chapter 27 opens with the military divisions:
“Now the children of Israel, according to their number… served the king in all matters of the military divisions.”
(27:1)
David’s army was organised into twelve divisions, each consisting of 24,000 men. Each division served one month of active duty per year. That means:
24,000 men × 12 divisions = 288,000 soldiers
This rotating system ensured that Israel always had a trained, ready force while preventing burnout and maintaining fairness. Verses 2–15 list the leaders of each division.
The point is clear:
Even the army was organised for service.
This is nothing chaotic about any of this. This is structure.
This is not improvisation. This is planning.
The Tribal Leaders are then covered in 1 Chronicles 27:16–24.
It now lists the leaders of the twelve tribes of Israel:
“Furthermore, over the tribes of Israel…” (27:16)
Verses 16–22 name the officers responsible for each tribe. These men oversaw local governance, justice, and administration.
Verse 23 adds an important note:
“But David did not number those twenty years old and under, because the Lord had said He would multiply Israel like the stars of heaven.”
David only counted the fighting men. But even this census showed a lack of faith because it serves as a reminder of the earlier incident in 1 Chronicles 21. Verse 24 tells us that Joab began the census but did not finish it because God’s wrath fell on Israel.
Even here, the Chronicler is teaching us something:
Organisation is good, but organisation without trust in God becomes dangerous.
Structure must never replace faith.
The Administrators (1 Chronicles 27:25–31)
Beginning in verse 25, we meet the administrators, the overseers of David’s estates and property:
“Over the king’s storehouses… over the vineyards… over the olive trees… over the herds…”
These officials supervised:
Crops
Fields
Vineyards
Olive groves
Flocks
Herds
Storage cities
They ensured that the kingdom’s resources were managed wisely. This is stewardship, practical, necessary, and God‑honouring.
Organisation is not only spiritual; it is practical.
The kingdom needed administrators, and David appointed them.
The Counselors (1 Chronicles 27:32–34)
Finally, verses 32–34 list David’s counsellors:
“Jonathan, David’s uncle, was a counsellor… Ahithophel was the king’s counsellor… Hushai was the king’s companion…”
The Hebrew word for councillor also means companion or friend. These were David’s closest advisors. The men who offered wisdom, counsel, and support. The list ends with Joab, commander of the army.
Even the king needed counsel.
Even the leader needed organisation around him.
This is a reminder that no one leads alone.
Wise leaders surround themselves with wise people.
Putting It All Together.
We’ve covered a vast amount of Scripture, but the outline helps us see what’s happening. David organised:
Priests (24:7–19)
Levites (24:20–31)
Musicians (25:1–31)
Gatekeepers (26:1–19)
Treasurers (26:20–28)
Civil officials (26:29–32)
The army (27:1–15)
Tribal leaders (27:16–24)
Administrators (27:25–31)
Counsellors (27:32–34)
This was a massive organisation. This is a comprehensive structure for worship, governance, administration, and national life.
One author summarises it well:
“Chapters 22–27 record David’s preparation for the fulfillment of the Davidic covenant promises that would come after he passed off the scene. His preoccupation with God’s promises and his preparation for their fulfillment serve as a good example for the Chronicler’s original readers.”
David’s zeal for the house of the Lord reflected his zeal for the reputation of the Lord. He put God’s glory before his own ambition. He prepared the next generation. He organised the kingdom so that God’s work would continue long after he was gone.
This is staying organised, not efficiency for efficiencies sake, but for faithfulness.
CONCLUSION:
As we come to the end of this extended passage, stretching from chapter 23 all the way through chapter 27, it’s worth pausing to reflect on what we’ve seen. If you were simply reading through these chapters casually, you might think, “This is tedious… just names, lists, divisions, and assignments.” But when you understand what’s happening, these chapters become a fascinating window into biblical organisation.
In chapter 23, we laid out the foundational principles of organisation. Now, having walked through chapters 24–27, we can review those principles and consider all this long section has taught us.
Let’s gather them together.
Four Principles from Chapter 23.
1. Organisation begins with knowing the total number of people.
That’s where David started. Before you can organise anything, you must know who you have and how many you have.
2. Organisation requires divisions of labour.
Different people, different roles, different responsibilities — all structured for the work of God.
3. Organisation requires clear duties.
David listed the old duties and the new duties of the Levites. Today we would call this job descriptions.
4. Organisation must be flexible.
David lowered the age of service from 30 to 20 because the workload increased. Good organisation adapts to changing needs.
Three Additional Principles from Chapters 24–27
5. Organisation should be fair.
There was no favouritism. Priests, Levites, musicians, gatekeepers — all were chosen by lot, symbolising God’s sovereignty and impartiality.
6. Organisation should designate a clear chain of command.
These chapters show leaders and workers, chiefs and assistants, commanders and counsellors. Good organisation requires clarity about who leads and who follows.
7. Organisation should select qualified people.
The text repeatedly highlights men of ability, skill, understanding, and strength. God’s work deserves capable hands.
One commentator summarises David’s heart beautifully:
“Every detail of temple service was important to David. This shows his heart for the Lord and how he lived in the present with the future God had promised clearly in view.”
David organised the present because he believed God would fulfil His promises in the future. His zeal for the house of the Lord reflected his zeal for the reputation of the Lord.
And that is the lesson for us.
In light of what God will do for us and with us in the future, we should organise His work and our involvement in it in the present, so that He is glorified now, and glorified then.
Organisation is not merely administrative. It is spiritual. It is worship. It is obedience.
